Milan Diary

At the end of January, I went back to Milan for a weekend. The last time, I went there for Christmas Holidays in 2015 and the weather wasn't good at all.

This time, the weather was fine for two days and it was very pleasant. We've completely forgotten the cold temperatures.

Mi piace molto Milano. Milan is MY favorite city in Italy, especially for its atmosphere, its restaurants, its people, its streets, and its stores. Some of my friends have always told me that Milan is the equivalent of Paris and that's the reason why I love the city.

Usually, we're landing at Linate Airport. But for this time, we arrived at Milan-Malpensa Airport. It's the second airport in Italy and the biggest airport in Milan which is located around 55km from the old town. I'm gonna give you some PRECIOUS advice. Don't take a taxi because it costs 95 euros. Actually, it was our first time at this airport and we didn't know the area very well. You can take the Malpensa Express. It costs 13 euros per person, and it's a train linking the airport (terminals 1 & 2) to the Central Train Station of Milan.

Once we arrived at the hotel, we've been upgraded (again). We booked a room at NH Touring Milano, near the metro station Turati. This hotel is very nice, very contemporary and the staff is always attentive to their clients.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IN MILAN IN 2 DAYS?
  • Porta Garibaldi-Porta Nuova District: It's a new district and the modern side of Milan: the central business district.  There, you'll find a mall with restaurants, stores, gym). Then, when you're going to Corso Como, you have many young designers stores, restaurants, and the famous concept store: 10 Corso Como. It's an Italian version of Colette Paris (who doesn't longer exists). It was founded by Carla Sozzani, sister of Franca Sozzani, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia.  On the Piazza XXV Aprile, there is also another concept store for furniture and decoration  : Cargo HighTech.  Go further on Corso Garibaldi, you will enjoy the view on a Gucci Art Wall,  you can go to the Moleskine Café, a womenswear brand Midinette which offers a collection of vintage and glamorous inspired-clothes. Concerning Brera, it's the artistic district of Milan. If I could define Brera, I'd say it's the equivalent of Saint Germain des Prés in Paris: bohemian chic known as "BOBO" (bourgeois bohème). You can find there a lot of art galleries, design stores, little restaurants, cafés.

  • Next to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II : You can visit the Museo del Novecento which is offering an amazing view on the church Il Duomo. This museum is dedicated to twentieth-century art and is gathering more than 400 masterpieces divided into 7 floors. Then, you can go to La Rinascente, for a shopping session. This department store has a rooftop with a wonderful view on Il Duomo. Next to it, there is the flagship store of Furla which is offering huge discount on their leather goods products and it worth it. Moreover, the products in Furla Italy are not the same as in France.
  • Quadrilatero Della Moda (Luxury Fashion District) :  At the end of the street Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, we will be located at la Piazza S. Babila, then Corso Venezia, Corso Giacomo Matteotti, Via Della Spiga. This district is perfect for shopping in the luxury stores. I had bought a hat at Borsalino (Via Sant'Andrea). The store is located between Jimmy Choo and Givenchy, face to Missoni. The most beautiful street in the district remains La Via Monte Napoleone.

SUMMARY OF MY BEST ADDRESSES IN MILAN

Where to sleep?
I had been staying in a four-stars hotel in the city center, located around 20 minutes from the Central Train Station by walk. I had booked on Booking.com.

Where to eat?
  • Nui City Jungle Café, Via Principe Amedeo. It's a restaurant which is very crowded for lunchtime because people working around there (Embassy, luxury brands HQ, Radio Monte Carlo, Banks) are eating there. The Milanese Veal is absolutely delicious.
  • Biancolatte, Via Turati. It's both a store and a restaurant. It's very cute and perfect for tea time/snack time.
  • California Bakery, Via Corso Como: sincerely, I'm not a huge fan. It's very small but if you want an American burger, you can go there.
  • Granaio Caffè e Cucina, next to Galerie Vittorio Emanuele II. I went there for tea time and when I checked the menu, I discovered that you can eat a slice of Sacher Torte. It's a typical pastry from Austria. I was so surprised to find it in Milan.
  • 10 Corso Como Café: for the amazing place.

What can you visit?
  • Brera District : for design and vintage stores lovers.
  • Quadrilatero della moda (Luxury Fashion District) :for luxury and premium stores.
  • Museo del Novecento
  • Il Duomo Di Milano
  • La Scala
  • Parco Sempione
  • Gallerie d'Italia
  • Fondazione Prada

PALMA DIARY

This is my sixth time in Palma de Mallorca. I went there on August 23 and traveled back on August 30 to Paris. I think it's the only place in Spain that I really like, especially because it's an island and I love islands; but also for the beauty of these hidden treasures. The ideal is to travel by car, but you should not be afraid of dangerous roads ..., especially in the region of Serra Tramuntana.

This time, I decided to rediscover the city off the tourist trail, and here is a little city guide. For transport, favor the bus. Indeed, the ticket costs 1.50 euros per trip. I was staying in a hotel located in Playa de Palma. The buses 23 and 25 went via the motorway to Palma, which was faster for us. Line 15 is very long ... and if you're in a hurry, it's not the right choice. And if you go in the evening, take a taxi back, it's the safest.

To eat in this city, I had to respect a strict diet and we decided to cook during our holidays. The supermarket was located next to our hotel, and it was very easy to decide what we're gonna eat. But sometimes, to get a drink, to eat ice cream, we would prefer to take a seat.

WHERE TO EAT AN ICE CREAM ?

GELATS D'AUTOR CAPRITXO
Their ice creams are so delicious and homemade with natural ingredients. You have a wide range of choices. My favorite ice creams were : mint chocolate chip and "cookies and cream". I think it was the best ice cream shop of Palma de Mallorca. Here's their address : Avinguda de Bartomeu Riutort à Playa de Palma.

GELATERIA PANNE LATTE
Located next to El Corte Inglès, Panne Latte is an ice cream shop where the customers are invited to eat an ice cream or to drink a coffee alongside deserts such as waffles, crepes or pancakes. Address  : C/ Joseph Tous i Ferrer, 14 à Palma.

A NICE PLACE TO DRINK A COCKTAIL OR A COFFEE

CAPPUCCINO GRAND CAFE - HOTEL MAMA PALMA
This café is owned by the Spanish restaurants' group "Grupo Cappuccino". There are 4 restaurants in Palma de Mallorca. This one is located in the hotel "Mama" which opened in May 2018. The interior design is wonderful.

CAPPUCINO GRAND CAFE - CALLE SAN MIGUEL
Located on the main street of the city, this café is based in an interior garden. It looks so pretty in a special location.

FIBONACCI LIVING PALMA - SAN NICOLAS
Nice café in the old town, next to the art galleries. They offer a large choice of pastries made with organic ingredients. I got there an iced coffee with an organic brownie. It was the best brownie that I ate in my whole life. The iced coffee was delicious and I went back the day after with my little brother. However, at that moment, the iced coffee wasn't available and I took a mocha with a chocolate ice cream inside.

WHAT CAN YOU VISIT?
  • The Castel del Bellver : a castle built in the XIV century, where the kings were living.
  • The Cathédrale de la Seu : the biggest church in Mallorca.
  • The city of Soller and Port de Soller : you can go there by train with the Ferrocaril de Soller, next to the Plaça d'Espanya.
  • The Santa Catalina District: it's the trendy district of Palma. You will find many restaurants, concept stores, and art galleries.
  • The Old Town: very charming. The best thing to do is to discover all the streets. There are many young designers stores over there, but also art galleries, and little patios.

HOT SPOT: MAMA PALMA HOTEL
Photo
It's the first five-stars boutique hotel of Cappuccino Group, designed by the French interior designer Jacques Grange. A Mediterranean-inspired oasis at the heart of Palma which seems perfect for a short stay in town. This charming hotel is located next to the chic district of Paseo Del Borne. On ground floor, you will find the restaurant Cappuccino Grand Café with an art deco style. The rooftop is only open to the clients and they can enjoy the little swimming pool there. In the basement, there is a private cinema.
